About LAB IN A BOX
Lab in a Box (LiB), developed by scientists and science communicators from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, is a pioneering pedagogical project, designed to develop students’ fascination with their environment, their critical thinking skills and their scientific curiosity. Focusing on experimental science and the scientific method, it aims to foster the creation of a community of future “citizen scientists” in different PALOP (African Countries of Portuguese Official Language or Portuguese-speaking countries).
With this objective, LiB develops, produces and implements in school communities of different Portuguese-speaking countries, an educational kit of scientific experiments – the “Lab in a Box” kit – that is portable and modular, with simple, appealing and curriculum-integrated experimental protocols, made with low cost materials of everyday use. The project also develops impact studies, and provides accredited teacher training, classroom follow-up and online resources for teachers.
Additionally, the LiB team pays special attention to the local context of the regions where the project is implemented, valuing their natural, social, historical and scientific capital, and including, whenever possible, local teachers and students in co-creation.
